How to Make Queso at Home

How do you make white queso from scratch?

It’s really simple — that beautiful, melty goodness seems like it’s complicated, but I can assure you it is most definitely not.

  1. Melt American cheese with a can of green chiles and some milk.
  2. Dip your favorite corn tortilla chip into the cheesy business.

What kind of white cheese is used in Mexican restaurant queso?

White American Cheese is used in the white queso recipe. << Yup! Not white Velveeta. Not all the myriad of other cheeses you can think of. Just plain, white American cheese.

What is White Queso Dip made of?

The base recipe is made up of white American cheese, green chilis, and milk.

There are plenty of ways to vary this combo though! What tastes good to you and what you prefer, add it in!

Ideas for a perfect addition:

  • Fresh Jalapenos
  • Pickled Jalapenos
  • Rotel Tomatoes
  • Green Onions & Peppers
  • Cooked chorizo
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder

The list is endless!

Where do you buy white American cheese?

The best place to purchase this is from the deli counter of your grocery store. You can have them slice it either into a big half-pound chunk (which is what I do) or into slices.

It is not the white Velveeta! Or, the Kraft singles. Head straight to your deli section and ask for half a pound of white American cheese, and they’ll fix you right up!

What is the difference between queso blanco and queso fresco?

Okay! This is a question I am asked ALL THE TIME. I get tons of pictures or videos from users who have queso fresco in a bowl, trying to melt it.

Queso Fresco is a FINISHING cheese. Like feta cheese, it’s made from cow’s milk, and it’s considered a “fresh” cheese.

Queso Blanco is the creamy, cheesy white dip you order at restaurants.

Mexican Restaurant Style Queso Dip

Easy white queso dip is just that — EASY!

You could make this in your microwave or small slow cooker if you’ve got one.

I prefer to cook this in a double boiler over the stovetop.

Using a glass bowl, nested inside a pot with water in it (don’t let the water touch the bowl!) over medium heat.

Place the cheese, chilis, milk, and cumin into the bowl.

Gently stir until it melts.

You can walk away, and stir every now and then, but the whole process takes about 20 minutes to melt.

In the microwave, add all the ingredients to a glass bowl and microwave in one-minute intervals.

For the baby slow cooker, just turn it on low and let it melt for an hour — talk about EASY!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do you make Mexican White Cheese Dip?

Over medium-low heat add a double boiler to your stove. Melt the white American cheese with a splash of milk and green chilies until completely smooth!

What is Mexican white cheese sauce made of?

While you would think it’s a complicated combination of heavy cream, cheddar cheese, Monterey jack, or some other type of cheese that’s real cheese… But, it’s just plain American cheese mixed with whole milk and chiles. You could add in a few sprinkles of pepper jack cheese if you like a bit of spice in your life!

This cheesy goodness is one of those easy recipes you’ll make over and over! It’s the perfect appetizer for Chalupa Night, and pairs perfectly with your favorite tortilla chips.
