Best Breakfast Casserole recipe

You will love this hearty breakfast casserole because it uses few ingredients but packs a real wow factor.

You’ll mix browned breakfast sausage with cream cheese for a tangy flavor. This gives a creamy texture to your egg casserole.

What makes this the BEST breakfast casserole? The creamy sauce of sour cream and cream of mushroom soup gets poured over the top before baking.

Topped with lots of cheese, this is a classic breakfast casserole with the volume turned up.

How to Make the Best Breakfast Casserole

Saying this is the “best” breakfast casserole is a bold statement!

But! For me, this recipe has all the components I crave in a breakfast dish.

You’ve got bread on the bottom — and this can be interchanged with leftover biscuits, crescent rolls, croissants, or whatever bread product you have in your kitchen.

Then, it’s got a creamy sausage mixture. Years ago, in my hometown of Asheville, NC a local restaurant served “stuffed French toast.” It was stuffed with sausage, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese for a sweet and savory combo.

This casserole is a nod to that! When you mix tangy cream cheese into savory breakfast sausage you get a great thing!

Spoon this over your bread, and you’re on your way to the best breakfast casserole recipe.

Then, you’ll scramble up some eggs with a little milk and pour that over the sausage and bread.

If you want a big Christmas morning breakfast, you can double this recipe for a large casserole dish!

Hand grate some sharp cheddar cheese, and add that to the casserole dish. I love having cheese in an egg casserole recipe. Your girl does not like eggs, but mix them up with cheese and bread and sausage and sour cream?! I’m in.

The thing that takes this recipe from a great recipe to the perfect breakfast casserole is the sour cream and soup sauce that gets poured over the top.

Mix together half a cup of sour cream with a can of cream of mushroom soup, and pour this over your egg casserole. It adds a little bit of tang and creaminess perfect for the entire family!

Serving Weekend Breakfast

You’ll bake the egg mixture in the oven with some extra cheese on top until it’s set in the center.

How do you know when your egg bake is set in the center? Give it a little jiggle while it’s in the oven, and if you see it really slosh from side to side, leave it in the oven longer.

If you’d like to top it with fresh green onions for a bright finish before you serve it, I think that would be lovely!

This savory casserole is a complete meal on its own. But, your great breakfast isn’t complete just yet!

Why not mix up a hash brown casserole recipe using frozen hash browns?? You could even do this the night before!

Canned Cinnamon Rolls Hack

Don’t forget the Canned Cinnamon Rolls Hack for turning plain canned cinnamon rolls into a bakery-style sweet roll!

If you enjoy chopped green chilies, add those to this savory breakfast bake. If you love red bell peppers and want a really festive Christmas morning saute them up with some green bell peppers and fold them into the whole thing.

Serve this easy casserole recipe with dashes of hot sauce, fresh avocados, and some fresh parsley on the side.

Any leftovers can go in an airtight container and kept in the fridge for up to 5 days.

If your favorite meal of the day is breakfast, this recipe is great for meal prepping!
