If you’re on the hunt for a good green onion cheese ball recipe, this is it!

This homemade cheese ball is for the onion lovers! The people who love the flavors of onions and who aren’t shy about it.

Simple ingredients get mashed together and shaped with plastic wrap to create four cheeseballs. You can freeze the ones you don’t need, and save them for another party, or whenever you need a little snack!

How to Make All the Onion Cheese Ball

First, let’s gather the ingredients you’ll need.

ingredients for onion cheese ball

Vidalia Onions — these are the sweet, yellow onions you get in the summertime. We save these onions in a cold, dry place all year long, because they’re just so delicious. You can use a regular sweet onion if it’s not summertime and you can’t find Vidalias!

Shallots — Y’all, this might be my favorite onion. It’s so subtle, just delicious. It adds a bit of purple color, too, like a red onion, but without that harsh bite. I keep shallots in my kitchen all the time and use them in my Prosecco Vinaigrette!

Green Onions — Green onions are what make a good cheese ball a GOOD cheeseball! They add flavor, but not a lot. Green onions also add color to your cheese ball mixture and it’s the perfect combination paired with cheddar cheese.

Cream Cheese — every good cheeseball needs some sturdy cream cheese to make it come together. You might think you need room-temperature cream cheese, and while that helps, it’s not necessary.

Cheddar Cheese — Sharp cheddar cheese works well in this cheeseball recipe. But, use what you have in your fridge. I prefer hand-grated cheese, but it’s not the worst thing in the world to use pre-grated. Since you’re not making a cheese sauce, it’s okay to use the bagged stuff!

Gouda Cheese — Again, I was using up the blocks of cheese I had in my fridge, You can make this green onion cheeseball with just cheddar, you can make it with Colby jack, or with mild cheddar. Whatever you have will make an amazing cheeseball!

Mayonnaise — I love a little hit of mayo in my cheeseballs. It does, however, make the cheese ball a little looser. So, leave this out if you want a sturdy cheese ball for your holiday parties.

Finally, you’ll need these seasonings:

  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Smash seasoning
  • Ranch powder

Mixing this Easy Cheese Ball Recipe

This is a dump everything into your large mixing bowl, and get your hands dirty moment! There is no tidy way of doing this.

You could use a hand mixer or electric mixer I guess! I would not recommend a food processor. You want the grated cheese strands still intact, and the small pieces of onions throughout the classic recipe.

Once you’ve smashed everything together in your large bowl, and all the ingredients are evenly distributed you’ll separate the mess of cheese into four (6 even!) pieces. I love this recipe because it’s mashed up once, and served multiple times!

cheeseball on plastic wrap

You can shape your cheese mixture into whatever you prefer.

I’ll freeze a ball shape and a log, similar to the size of a Ritz Cracker. If you want to make smaller cheese balls, place a plop in some plastic wrap, then smoosh into a cookie cutter. The possibilities are endless!

pro tip for shaping a cheese ball

Pro Tip: Plop your ball of cheese onto a piece of plastic wrap, then smoosh it into a small bowl to get the most perfectly rounded cheeseball! You want the bottom flat, so it sits well on your serving platter, and this gives you that! Yay.

Shape it into a football for the Super Bowl or Game Day party!

You could even shape it into mini cheese balls and add it to an Individual Cheeseboard.

Freeze your cheeseballs for up to six months. I’ll double-wrap them in plastic wrap, and then store them in an air-tight container.

They only need to thaw in the fridge, and then you serve as you want.

Serving the Best Cheese Ball

You’ve mashed up your green onion cheeseball, you’ve smooshed it into a shape you want, and you’re ready to serve!

serving a cheeseball with ritz crackers

Whether you are serving this for New Year’s Eve, Christmas Eve, a family gathering, or a plain Tuesday night watching your favorite show, this amazing cheese ball recipe will quickly become your crowd favorite.

If I’m serving this on a charcuterie board, I’ll serve with Wheat Thins or Club Crackers.

When serving alone, I’ll use the “cheese log” and serve it with Ritz Crackers.

cheese ball square with red pepper jelly

I love creating a cheese “square” with a little indention in the center of the square. I’ll add some pepper jelly to the center, and serve with crackers.

Savory cheese balls are making a comeback for entertaining at home, and I’m so excited to share all the recipe creation ideas I’m coming up with for the perfect party appetizer.
