How to Make Sweet and Spicy Green Beans

First, you’ll gather your ingredients:

Now, let’s talk about cooking methods for green beans.

With this recipe, I’m going to roast the green beans. However, you could definitely use a large skillet and cook over high heat using this same seasoning.

If you want to make some of this recipe ahead of time, you’ll want to blanch the green beans in boiling water, then shock in ice water. You can then store the green beans until you are ready to use them! (This method is especially helpful if you’re using a skillet cooking process, and not roasting in the oven.)

What kind of green beans can you use besides fresh?

You could use frozen green beans, just run them under some hot water to remove any ice crystals.

I’ve never tried this with canned green beans, but I don’t see why the glaze wouldn’t work!

Other vegetables to try with this recipe:

  • Bell Pepper
  • Broccoli
  • Snap Peas

Spread your green beans out on a sheet pan, and drizzle olive oil on top. Give a good toss using your hands, then sprinkle kosher salt over top. Toss again!

Roast these green beans in the oven for 20 minutes, at 425˚.

425˚ is a great medium high heat to roast any vegetable.

While the beans roast, you’ll make the glaze.

Let’s make the sweet and spicy glaze!

This could be used for any food, really. While we’re making enough for this one recipe, feel free to use the same ratios and create your own leftover sauce for later.

In a small bowl mix together honey, sriracha, and Bachan’s Japanese BBQ Sauce.

I used a 1-1-1 ratio, so a tablespoon of each.

You can control the heat level, so if you’re not a spicy foods fan, don’t add as much sriracha.

Substitution Ideas:

Instead of honey, try brown sugar

  • If you don’t have sriracha, but you have garlic chili sauce, use that!
  • Bachan’s is a new to me item, so if you can’t find it, try this spicy soy marinade instead!
  • If you’re a fan of sesame oil, add just a tinge. Not much at all!
  • You could also grate in some garlic cloves, or use a drizzle of garlic oil.

After your green beans are blistered and roasted to a golden brown and look rather ugly, remove them from the oven and drizzle your sweet and spicy glaze over top.

Give a good toss with tongs or a spatula, and put back in the oven for a few minutes.

Now, because there is sweet sugars in the glaze you’ll want to keep an eye close to the oven so nothing burns.

Once the beans are roasted to your preference, remove from the oven and plate.

If you’re feeling extra fancy, you could sprinkle some sesame seeds over top! Or even a tiny amount of red pepper flakes! << This is a great way to let every one know it’s a spicy green bean recipe.
