HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALL! 🍂🥣✨ The Fall Equinox has HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALL! 🍂🥣✨ The Fall Equinox has officially arrived, which means I am giving us ALL permission to enter our soup-making era. And before the soups, stews, chilis, and cozy Sunday dinners begin, I’m stocking my freezer with homemade bone broth. Here’s my very loose “recipe”: 🦴 Save bones! Chicken carcasses, beef bones, whatever you’ve got. I keep a bag in the freezer and add to it as I go. 🥕 Add your vegetables. Onion, carrots, celery, garlic — this is a great place for odds and ends. 🌿 Add herbs + seasonings. Bay leaves, peppercorns, thyme, parsley… use what you love. 💦 Cover everything with water. 🔥 Bring it up to a simmer, then let it cook LOW and SLOW for hours. You want the water barely bubbling away. 🥄 Skim off any foam or impurities that rise to the top. 🫙 Strain everything out, cool the broth promptly, then portion it into freezer-safe containers. ❄️ Label + freeze! Now Future You has homemade bone broth waiting for soups, sauces, gravies, rice, beans, and all the cozy things. There is something SO satisfying about opening the freezer in November and finding jars of homemade broth ready and waiting. I can’t believe I’m sharing this with you because I can’t believe I’m sharing this with you because once you know how embarrassingly easy it is… you’ll never un-know it. 😂 👉 Boursin Marinara is that appetizer that makes people hover around the dish going “WAIT. What IS in this?!” And you just smile sweetly knowing you barely did anything. THE RECIPE (2-4 ingredients, 5 minutes):
🍅 1 jar marinara - Rao’s or Carbone is chef’s kiss (use a pizza sauce jar for a small group)
🧀 1 wheel Boursin - Basil & Chive is my fave, Garlic & Fine Herbs works too
🌱 Optional but fancy: balsamic glaze + fresh basil
🥖 Soft Italian or French bread, torn into hunks for scooping INSTRUCTIONS: Pour marinara into your dish, crumble Boursin right over top.
Drizzle with glaze, sprinkle basil.
Serve as-is OR bake at 350 for 10-15 mins until melty & bubbly. 🤯 Both are insane. That’s it. I’m serving this AGAIN at my dinner party tonight… I’m serving this AGAIN at my dinner party tonight… and I have absolutely no shame in repeating a good thing. 😂 This is my Chalupa Party, and it might be one of my favorite ways to feed a house full of people. You make a big pot of pulled pork + pinto bean chalupa, pile up the Fritos and tortilla chips, and set out ALLLLL the toppings. Cheese. Sour cream. Lettuce. Tomatoes. Guacamole. Jalapeños. Hot sauce. The works. Then? Everybody builds their own bowl, goes back for seconds, and hangs around the table talking way longer than they planned. But here’s the part I really love as the HOST: Almost everything can be made ahead of time. Which means when my people walk through the door tonight, I’m not standing over the stove trying to finish dinner. I’m pouring drinks, pointing everyone toward the food, and joining the party I invited them to. THAT is my kind of dinner party. ✨ And yes… when a menu works this well, I will absolutely serve it again and again and again. This is my Roasted Dinner Party—and the whole idea is ridiculously simple: Chicken. Potatoes. Broccoli. Tomato + burrata. Warm bread. People you like around your table. The chicken, potatoes, and broccoli all roast at 425°—you just add them to the oven in stages so everything finishes together. Dinner can be on the table in under an hour. THAT is the kind of dinner party I want you hosting. Not the one where you’ve been cooking for three days and you’re too tired to enjoy your own guests. The one where you say, “Come over. I bought a CHEESE BAKER on Amazon, because apparen I bought a CHEESE BAKER on Amazon, because apparently this is exactly who I am now. 😂 And I regret absolutely nothing. A little spoonful of marinara in every well, a hunk of mozzarella on top, then into the oven until everything is hot, melty, bubbly and begging to be scooped up with warm baby naan. THAT’S IT. But here’s why I really love this thing: it’s a PARTY TRICK. ✨ Bring this bubbling little beauty out while everyone is standing around the kitchen with a drink in their hand and suddenly we have an EVENT. And obviously my brain is already going… → pizza versions with pepperoni → baked brie bites → goat cheese + hot honey → spinach artichoke something-or-other → individual little queso situations → ALL THE HOLIDAY THINGS This is exactly the kind of hosting piece I love buying: not something that sits in a cabinet waiting for one specific occasion, but something that makes an ordinary “come over for a drink” feel FUN. I fear I have made the CRUNCHIEST chicken tenders I fear I have made the CRUNCHIEST chicken tenders of my life. 😳 And yes, I realize I say things like this with some regularity. BUT LISTEN TO THAT CRONCH. These started with chicken tenderloins hanging out for four hours in buttermilk seasoned with BBQ seasoning + ranch powder. Then things got a little out of hand. Into seasoned flour + cornstarch. BACK into the buttermilk. And then I looked at the cornflakes and the half-bag of Honey BBQ potato chips in my kitchen and thought… Well. Obviously these belong together. 😂 Crush them up, PRESS them all over the chicken, and fry until those tenders are deeply golden, craggy, crispy little pieces of heaven. And because apparently making outrageously good fried chicken wasn’t enough of a project for one afternoon, I made a BIG batch. Some became dinner. Some are becoming Chicken Bird Dogs. Some are becoming crispy chicken lettuce wraps. And a whole bunch are currently hanging out in my Homemade Convenience Freezer because Future Me deserves crispy chicken, too. I’m testing whether I can take them straight from frozen → air fryer → back to CRONCHY. We shall see. 👀 But the fresh ones?! 10/10. No notes. Especially dunked directly into my homemade honey mustard. 11 kitchen products I actually use ALL THE TIME. T 11 kitchen products I actually use ALL THE TIME. These are the kitchen appliances, cookware, serving pieces, storage tools, and little helpers that have earned their spot at Chez Sweetpea. Some are splurges, some are downright cheap, but every single one gets used. Say YES, CHEF to get the link! Plot twist: I don’t drink coffee. 😂 I use my SMEG coffee maker every single morning to brew loose-leaf tea! Brewing the tea directly through the machine gives me a strong, full-bodied cup without dealing with tea bags or individual infusers. One of the most-used appliances in my kitchen. The appliance that lives in my coat closet... and somehow comes out several times a week. 😂 I use my multicooker for homemade bone broth, collard greens, shredded meats, soups, and all kinds of meal prep. Apartment kitchens require every appliance to earn its storage space, and this one absolutely does. If you see me cooking something on the stove, there is a VERY good chance I’m using my Made In 6-quart saucier. Sauces, soups, pasta, braises, Bolognese—you name it. The rounded sides make stirring so easy, and the size works beautifully when I’m cooking for myself OR feeding a table full of people. Glass jars forever and ever, amen. 🙌 I use Weck jars and Ball jars for homemade bone broth, salad dressings, sauces, leftovers, meal prep, and refrigerator storage. I’ve owned some of mine for a DECADE. Buy the useful thing once and keep using it—that’s my kind of kitchen essential. HOSTESSES, THIS ONE. 👀 Sheet pan lids are one of my favorite tricks for make-ahead entertaining. Build most of your cheeseboard or charcuterie board directly on a quarter or half sheet pan, snap the lid on, refrigerate, then finish it right before your guests arrive. Future You says THANK YOU. Proof that a favorite kitchen product doesn’t have to be expensive! This inexpensive Walmart plate has a slight lip, stacks beautifully, and doubles as an easy serving platter for appetizers, snacks, sandwiches, desserts—you name it. Half stays nice and THICK — exactly how I want ranch dip to behave when I’m scooping it up with cauliflower, carrots, chips, or whatever else needs dipping. Say, “I’m the main character!” For the recipe! Tonight, she’s getting the full treatment with all the toppings. Then politely stored off camera in the freezer for later… Next week, she might find herself ladled over a crispy baked potato. Next month? Chili cheese nachos during the game feels entirely possible. This is exactly what I mean when I talk about Main Character Meals. They don’t have to be elaborate. They don’t even have to be new. Sometimes the most thoughtful thing I can do for myself is make one big pot of something delicious and let it keep taking care of me in different ways. Cook once. Enjoy it tonight. You live here, too. You deserve the good plate, the cloth napkin, the freshly grated Parmesan, and the little squeeze of grilled lemon that makes you think, “Ohhhh, this is GOOD.” Tonight’s Main Character Meal is a grilled chicken Caesar salad. 🥗 Grilled chicken. Grilled lemon squeezed overtop. Hand-grated Parmesan. Homemade croutons. And Caesar dressing straight from the jar. Because Host Yourself First does NOT mean “make absolutely everything from scratch.” It means being thoughtful about where you spend your effort. I wanted homemade croutons. I did not want homemade Caesar dressing. So I bought the dressing. 😂 And while the grill was hot, I made extra chicken because tomorrow’s version of me would very much appreciate opening the refrigerator and finding delicious protein ready to rumble.
