This post showcases lots of everyday examples of homemade tablescapes that are a great way to center create ambience at any party.

As a perpetual host, I love telling people to “Shop your home!” You can create dining room table centerpieces from your collection of anything in your home.

Dinner parties are extra special when you take the time to craft a beautiful centerpiece.

That does not mean it needs to be stuffy, expensive, or over the top!

A collection of small vases with wildflowers is a simple option that everyone will love. Even better if you offer your guests to take a small vase of flowers home with them!

I’m excited to talk through a variety of table settings I’ve created for various dinner parties I’ve hosted.

Dining Table Centerpiece Ideas for 2-4 People

In my small apartment, I have a round table that seats up to six. Six is a tight fit, so I try to keep it to 4-5 people.

Setting a round table is easy! Here’s the “template” I use

I almost always have a cloth on my table. Mainly because I iron the tablecloths directly on the table (there is a protector underneath, but it’s still damaging the table!)

Layer One: Tablecloth.

I have a “thing” with tablecloths. If it’s highly patterned, I’ll focus more on simple flowers and lots of candles. If it’s a simple tablecloth, I’ll use more colorful flowers and accents.

This is a fun paper table runner that I got from Hester and Cook. I love their paper tablegoods! They’re incredible!

With this pattern, while it’s a simple two-tone option, so I used some (fake!) flowers that I’ve used on other places and these cute candle holders from Amazon!

Layer Two: Placemats.

Here’s a zoomed-out version of the close-up above, but without the patterned paper underneath. I opted to use Serena and Lily Placemats and a patterned plate underneath the floral arrangement.

The white Beatriz Dinner Plates are my new favorite purchase! I love their scalloped pattern while being a plain white plate.

Going back to tablecloths for a minute: this tablecloth I found at a thrift store, and it is the best tablecloth I own. I paid $3 for it, and it’s STURDY.

It’s a double-lined tablecloth with gorgeous piping. Most likely custom-made.

This brings me to this point: If you have the budget, buy a nice tablecloth and use it frequently.

Here is a similar tablecloth, this one is thin and has a ruffle. Again, purchased at a thrift store for $3! Woo hoo.

I used Draper James placemats, and while it’s a place setting for three people, I used the fourth one to keep it concentric. Draper James no longer offers this pink gingham, but they have super cute options!

Layer Three: Stacks of Plates.

The plates on this table setting are ones I got from a neighbor’s estate sale, and then the Singapore Bird luncheon plates are from my grandmother.

The only new options on this table are from Anthropologie, and I waited until the napkins were on sale to purchase them. They no longer have these in stock, but again, I love a ruffle!

Here’s my table, without a tablecloth, and using only placemats. Something seems incredibly casual without the tablecloth.

While it’s a simple table setting, you’ll find layers of plates, vintage wine glasses, and cute espresso cups that weren’t used, but there for aesthetic.

Most of the time, I like to keep my table set, so I don’t use it as a ‘catch-all’ in my home. ((Do you have those surfaces that are flat and easily attract items that just pile up, waiting for you to make a decision?))

Setting a Rectangle Table

Alright, people! This is a Thanksgiving table setting that uses my mother’s china.

While we use the plates, we hardly use the full service of plates, etc. So, this was a fun Thanksgiving for just a few of us!

I host a lot of larger parties. 8-10 people isn’t an uncommon dinner party to host!

I use the same method for a round table as I do for a large, rectangular table.

In the center of the table, I line it with a table runner and then add lots of plain, unscented candles. I love using tea lights in all kinds of glassware.

Then, I head out to the yard and find something I can use on the table. This southern belle loves using her magnolia branches! Even better when the magnolias are in bloom!

Nestle everything in, and triple-check that there are no branches or florals in the line of the candles. ((Or, use battery operated candles!))

You’ll notice that table doesn’t have a tablecloth, so plain placemats were used.

The cloth napkins were big enough to loosely tie, and place next to the silverware.

Now, y’all! I have said that I love shopping for tableware at home. Well, one year, I put the store-bought floral arrangements in the empty green bean cans for Thanksgiving.

The runner is two tea towels I purchased a long time ago after Thanksgiving at Target. They were on an endcap for $1 a piece, and I bought enough to use as cloth napkins in the autumnal months.

Here are those same tea towels, but used as napkins!

And, you’ll notice more magnolia branches and candles.

I am all about not re-inventing the wheel!

If you notice the pearl napkin holders. I made those 10+ years ago after seeing something similar on Pinterest. I didn’t want to pay $$$ for napkin rings, so I strung some pearls onto stretchy thread from the craft store.

I’m still using those same napkin holders!

Adding Interest to Your Table Centerpiece

Most times, a table needs a little texture added to it to make it special.

This table setting used Hester and Cook Magnola paper placemats (aren’t they gorgeous?!), and then lots of candles and fake diamonds.

This was for my grandmother’s birthday celebration, and the sparkle of the fake diamonds was really illuminated with the candlelight.

You’ll notice my favorite fake battery-operated candles! I love using these.

Full disclosure: one time for a party, the centerpiece caught on fire… One of the branches got moved, and up in flames, it went.

I am the fifth generation to sit around this table, and the table is precious to me!

Seeing that small fire made me vow never to use large candles + flames on it again! Now I stick to small votives with tall cylinders and fake candles!

super simple friendsgiving tablescape

For this Friendsgiving tablescape, I lined the table with kraft paper.

Simple, right?! Just wait.

Traced the plates and scripted each place setting.

Then, on the fake plate, I added a little sticky note with a conversation starter. That evening, each guest had to work the starter into the conversation.

The center of the table was a pottery bowl of oranges, some fake garland, and candles.

That bottle of Disaronna is what I call a “post-dinner discussion bottle.”

I have a rule: if you want to gossip, say something not nice, or just smack talk someone, you have to swig the bottle first. It’s just a little something to keep the evening light and fun!

People look forward to what bottle is the post-dinner discussion bottle at each party!

Dining Table Centerpiece Ideas that are Simple

new years eve dinner party table setting

Last fall, I got these little cards called “Dinner Dares” from Anthropologie.

They no longer sell them ((so many of the things on this list are not sold anymore! Sorry, y’all!!)), but they are so much fun!

Each place setting got a card, and we went around the table enjoying these little dares.

The table was anchored by chocolate in martini glasses and a bowl filled with citrus fruits. This was the table for my Tini Weenie Party, and it was an homage to the citrus martini and chocolate martini recipes served that night.

Plus, the chocolates served as a little sweet treat for everyone to take home with them!

Hosting Brunch is a great way to entertain at home!

This table setting only needed the food in the center.

A large board filled with homemade quiche and store-bought berries.

Then, on either side of that store-bought muffins and cinnamon roll bites.

The table looks great; everyone digs in and fills their plate without leaving their seat!

I hope these table setting ideas give you lots of inspiration to create your own amazing table for your next gathering!
