🥖 The Story Behind These Sliders

Growing up, Swiss Onion Dip was always the first thing to vanish at parties. Just three ingredients, a quick stir, and into the oven for bubbly, cheesy bliss. One day, I thought, what if I turned that into a slider?

The ham adds heartiness, the Hawaiian rolls soak up all that cheesy onion goodness, and suddenly my favorite dip was an even bigger hit — especially for game day spreads. These are my go-to when I need something effortless, nostalgic, and dangerously good.

🛒 Ingredients (with Tips)

For the Filling:

  • 8 oz Swiss cheese — shred by hand for the best melt.
  • 8 oz mayonnaise — full-fat for creamy, rich flavor.
  • 1 medium sweet onion — Vidalia if available, shredded for even distribution.
  • 1/2 tsp Smash Seasoning — or your favorite all-purpose seasoning.
  • 1/2 lb thin-sliced deli ham — chopped so every bite gets ham goodness.

For the Rolls:

  • 12 Hawaiian rolls — split horizontally.
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise — to mix with the mustard for a tangy spread.
  • 1 tbsp yellow or Dijon mustard — choose your heat level.

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Make the filling: In a large bowl, mix Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, shredded onion, Smash Seasoning, and chopped ham until well combined.
  3. Prep the rolls: In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise and mustard. Spread evenly on the cut sides of the rolls.
  4. Assemble the sliders: Place the bottom half of the rolls in a 9×13 baking dish. Spread the ham and cheese mixture evenly over the rolls, then place the top half of the rolls on top.
  5. Bake covered: Loosely cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  6. Bake uncovered: Remove foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese is melty.
  7. Serve: Cool slightly, then cut into individual sliders and serve warm.

✨ Tips & Tricks

🕒 Make Ahead

Assemble the sliders up to 24 hours in advance, cover tightly, and refrigerate. Bake just before serving. I like to make the filling and sauce the day before, then slather everything together when it’s close to serving time.

🧊 Freezer-Friendly

Assemble but do not bake. Wrap tightly in foil and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking.

🔄 Variations

  • Swap Swiss for Gruyère, provolone, or even white cheddar.
  • Add a layer of baby spinach for freshness.
  • Use caramelized onions for a deeper, sweeter flavor.

🔄 How to Store & Reheat Sliders

Storing:

  • Keep leftover sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To keep them from getting soggy, place a sheet of parchment paper between layers.

Reheating:

  • Oven (Best Option): Wrap sliders in foil and bake at 325°F for 10–15 minutes until heated through.
  • Air Fryer: Place sliders in the basket, set to 325°F, and heat for 5–7 minutes.
  • Microwave (Quickest): Wrap a slider in a damp paper towel and heat in 20–30 second bursts — this keeps the bread from drying out.

Freezer Tip: If reheating from frozen, let sliders thaw overnight in the fridge before warming for best results.

🥗 What to Serve With

  • Italian Triple Dipper — for another cheesy showstopper.
  • Lemon Pepper Hot Wings — just what game day grub calls for!
  • Kettle chips and dill pickles — for crunch and tang.
  • A crisp green salad — for balance (and to pretend you’re eating light).

🧅 Ingredient Spotlight: Vidalia Onions

Vidalia onions are the secret ingredient that make these sliders next-level delicious. Grown in Georgia, they’re naturally sweeter than regular onions thanks to the low sulfur soil in the region. When shredded into this recipe, they blend beautifully with the Swiss cheese and mayo, adding a gentle sweetness that balances the savory ham.

Pro Tip: Vidalias are typically in season from April through August, but you can find them year-round in many stores. If you can’t get them, substitute another sweet onion variety like Walla Walla or Maui.
