Wedge Salad for a Crowd

Wedge Salad for a Crowd is all your favorite toppings for the classic American restaurant salad, but made for a crowd!

wedge salad for a crowd

Wedge Salad for a Crowd stemmed from the desire to serve 8 wedge salads, but not having the refrigerator room for 8 plates with individual salads.

And, while this recipe isn’t a traditional wedge salad, all the components are there.

If you’re anything like me, when you head to your favorite steakhouse you know you’re ordering a wedge salad.

It’s one of my favorite recipes to serve as a Simple Dinner Party Menu Idea!

What’s in a good wedge salad?

Crisp Iceberg Lettuce – super cold, too! Like, almost get a brain freeze on your teeth from the crunchy iceberg lettuce!

Blue Cheese Crumbles – blue cheese is synonymous with wedge salad and buffalo wings, right?! Tangy blue cheese can’t be passed on with a classic wedge salad recipe.

Salty Bacon – crispy bacon crumbles (My favorite is to use Snoop Dogg’s Billionaire’s Bacon!) on top of the iceberg wedges is a must-have!

Cherry Tomatoes – bursting with flavor- add a little sweetness and acidity to the salad!

Red Onion – it’s not my favorite, it can be too harsh and spicy! But, later in the post, I’ll share a few tips to alleviate this.

Then, of course, you have your homemade blue cheese dressing or homemade ranch dressing. That creamy blue cheese dressing with flecks of bleu cheese and lots of sour cream is the perfect homemade dressing for lettuce wedges!

When you have a crowd over, and you want to serve wedge salad, give this favorite recipe a go!

First, remove the limp outer leaves of the lettuce head.

Next, take your head of iceberg lettuce and cut it down into 6-8 thin wedges of iceberg lettuce.

Lay them all out on a big platter.

We’re building a big wedge salad board, so lay over the mini wedge salads sliced cucumbers, sliced shallots, sliced tomatoes, and anything else your like on your side salad!

Then, you’ll take a hunk of Boursin Shallot & Chive cheese, and break it into small bits, placing them all over the salad. If you’re a fan of blue cheese, use that!

The big platter starts to look a little messy, but I promise you this is the perfect side dish!

The Best Way to Serve this Simple Salad

Lay the platter out on the table, and let your people serve themselves.

Have extra dressing on the side, and a few extra toppings if you have any!

This salad recipe is great for dinner parties! Especially if you’re asked to bring a salad! Just travel with the dressing on the side, and drizzle over when you’re ready to serve.

Pro Tip: If you are using red onions, soak them in a bowl of ice water for 10 minutes before adding them to the salad. This removes the harsh bite!

How do you cut a lettuce head for Wedge Salad?

I take my iceberg head, remove the limp outer leaves, then bang it on the countertop, so the stem end hits the cutting board.

Use your fingers to reach in and remove the stem/core. Then, cut the head of lettuce in half, half again, and again.

You should be able to get 6-8 wedges out of one head of lettuce. The other way you can cut the lettuce is into discs. This is how I make this Easy Wedge Salad!

Another great idea is to do a Wedge Salad Bar! This is a fun light lunch idea if you are hosting!

Have all the toppings out, and people can create their own favorite salad.

Here are some topping ideas:

  • Fresh Chives
  • Bacon Bits
  • Juicy Tomatoes
  • Shallots or Red Onions
  • Blue Cheese Salad Dressing
  • Ranch Dressing
  • Croutons
  • Black Pepper to grind overtop

This Wedge Salad for a Crowd has a delightful dressing!
