I love having Uncle Ben’s Long Grain and Wild Rice mix on hand to make all kinds of recipes, especially in this recipe! This rice mixture makes great casserole fillings, just like boxed stuffing mix does! If you don’t have this kind of rice, use dry stuffing!

Now, some people like to make this creamy swiss chicken bake with a stuffing topping in the slow cooker. But, I don’t own a slow cooker, so I make it right in a casserole dish.

Kitchen Equipment:

  • Baking Dish or Casserole Dish
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula

Start by adding your rice and seasoning mixture to the bottom of a baking dish.

I used a nonstick casserole dish, but if I were making this in an aluminum foil pan, I would add the rice to the soup and milk mixture.

In a mixing bowl stir together your cream of chicken and can of milk until combined. If you don’t have the can of cream of chicken soup you can always swap it out for the cream of mushroom soup! ((In most recipes you can use those interchangeably!))

Combine cream of chicken soup mixture into your baking dish with the rice and seasoning, and give it a good stir to coat all the rice in liquid.

Top the loose rice mixture with shredded chicken.

What kind of chicken should you use?

I used leftover fried chicken, but you could use pulled rotisserie chicken, boiled skinless chicken breasts, pulled chicken thighs, any kind of chicken you like. I made this recipe with cooked chicken, and have not tried it with fresh chicken.

Some swiss chicken casserole recipes use raw chicken breasts that are baked with the soup mixture and cheese overtop, then covered in either Ritz crackers or dry stuffing mix.

The best part of this recipe is it uses leftovers to create a whole new meal! It will quickly become one of your favorite recipes in the winter!

Once your rice is topped with chicken, let’s mix up the creamy sauce that goes on top of the chicken.

creamy swiss cheese sauce

To a small bowl add in sour cream, mayonnaise, shredded parmesan cheese, shredded swiss cheese, and House Seasoning (recipe in printable recipe card).

House Seasoning is equal parts garlic powder, onion powder, and kosher salt. With however much black pepper you want! Mix it all up in a jar, and use it often!

Cover this whole creamy swiss chicken casserole with tin foil and bake in the oven for an hour, removing the foil after 40 minutes.

This swiss chicken casserole recipe can be frozen and saved for later! Keep aluminum pans on hand so you can freeze an oven-ready meal.

When the busy weeknight dinners take over your life, you’ll be ready with a meal the entire family will love!

If you wanted to make this in the crock pot, just add all the ingredients and cook on low for 4-5 hours — just until the rice is cooked!

Here are some additions you could add:

To the swiss cheese sauce, you could add half a cup of white wine if you’re feeling frisky! Every comfort food pairs well with a glass of wine!

A little lemon zest or lemon juice wouldn’t hurt the rice! It adds great flavor, giving a bright acidic taste to the entire meal.

There are lots of parmesan cheeses, I prefer parmigiana Reggiano, but use whatever you have on hand!

It’s a great time to use up that little bit you have in a bin in your fridge. Cheddar cheese works great here!
