How to Cook Breakfast Sausage

First, you’ll need to choose your sausage.

The first step in cooking breakfast sausage is to choose the right kind of sausage.

Breakfast

There are many different varieties of breakfast sausage available, so it’s important to choose one that will work well with your recipe.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Flavor: Breakfast sausage comes in a wide range of flavors, from mild to spicy. If you’re not sure which flavor to choose, start with a mild sausage and work your way up from there.
  • Form: Breakfast sausage can come in links, patties, or crumbles. Choose the form that works best for your recipe.
  • Ingredients: Pay attention to the ingredients in your sausage. Some sausages may contain allergens or other ingredients that you want to avoid. This is why I love Swaggerty’s Sausage so much! There are no fillers, and it’s all-natural ingredients.

If you are wanting to make your own homemade breakfast sausage recipe with ground pork (or any ground meat!) this recipe is a great place to start. You can flavor your homemade sausages with pretty much any spice you’d like.

For instance, I’m not a fan of fennel, which is found in most Italian sausage blends.

Prepare Your Pan

The next step in cooking breakfast sausage is to prepare your pan. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Non-stick pan: Use a non-stick pan to prevent the sausage from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  • Cast-Iron Skillet: this is my preferred method for cooking breakfast sausage crumbles.
  • Lay the sausage in a COLD frying pan. Press it out into a single layer, like you were pressing out pizza dough.
  • Low to medium heat: Cook the sausage over low to medium heat. This will help ensure that it cooks evenly without burning.
  • By pressing out your sausage, then turning on the stove, you allow the sausage to brown really well on one side.

Cook Your Sausage

Now that you’ve chosen your sausage and prepared your pan, it’s time to cook your sausage. Here are a few tips to help you cook your sausage perfectly:

making breakfast sausage crumbles
  • Once your sausage is browned on one side, flip it over without crumbling yet.
  • Let it brown on the other side for a few minutes, then use your meat chopper to break up the sausage into crumbles.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan: Don’t add too many sausages to the pan at once. This will make it difficult for them to cook evenly. Instead, cook them in batches if necessary.
  • Don’t poke the sausage: Avoid poking the sausage with a fork or knife while it’s cooking. This will release the juices, which can make the sausage dry and tough.
  • Flip the sausage: Flip the sausage halfway through cooking to ensure that both sides are evenly browned.
  • Use a meat thermometer: To ensure that your sausage is cooked all the way through, use a meat thermometer. The internal temperature of the link should be 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can also use the oven method by laying out a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet. Use a half-sheet pan that has rimmed sides, so the sausage grease doesn’t run all over your oven.

Place sausages in a single layer on your pan. If you’re not using parchment paper it’s a good idea to spray the shallow baking pan with a little oil to give you the best results.

Roast in a 375-degree oven for 10-12 minutes, remove, and give the pan a good shake. This will help rotate the sausages so the other side gets browned as well.

Once the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees, you can remove it from the oven, and drain it on paper towels.

The cooking time varies if you’re using ground turkey sausage, chicken sausage, or thicker sausages.

You can also make air fryer breakfast sausage links! Just place the raw sausages in your air fryer basket and cook at 390˚ for 8-10 minutes. Air fryer sausage links have that extra snap we all love!

Serve Your Sausage

Once your sausage is cooked, it’s time to serve it. Here are a few ideas for how to serve your breakfast sausage:

  • With eggs: Breakfast sausage pairs perfectly with eggs. Serve it alongside scrambled eggs, an omelet, or even a breakfast sandwich.
  • With pancakes or waffles: For a sweet and savory breakfast, serve your sausage with pancakes or waffles.
  • In a breakfast burrito: Wrap your cooked sausage in a tortilla with scrambled eggs, cheese, and your favorite toppings for a delicious breakfast burrito.
  • On a breakfast sandwich: Top a toasted English muffin or bagel with cooked sausage, egg, and cheese for a delicious breakfast sandwich. I love toasted pieces of bread with eggs, American cheese, and sausage!
